AYE!!!

I don’t know how many people have even seen these news posts, but my “iPad Only” animated short now has a name! AND the main character OCs have been fully realized!

For those of you who have zero clue what I’m referring to (everyone), I’m working on an animated short (2 minutes) that is created entirely on an iPad. Voice Acting, Storyboarding, Animation, the whole nine! I’ll be periodically making posts to go through the process in a bit more detail, so if you’re interested in learning how to make cartoons with nothing but an iPad, mic, and an Apple Pencil - Follow Along!

I present to you: The full body character designs for the upcoming animated short/pilot episode of....

CORPORATE QUESTS!

If this is the first post you’re seeing within this series of news posts, the idea behind this feed is to bring attention to what all can be done with animating on nothing but an iPad. While it isn’t necessarily the cheapest way to make animated cartoons, in my opinion, it’s far more accessible to a whole lot more people than many other routes you could take.

In a previous post, I touched briefly on recording voice acting with the iPad and a Yeti mic, and I plan to make more detailed posts explaining that and much, much more in the future, so stick around if you’re interested!

Voice Acting =  DONE

I know I JUST did my original post kicking this journey off yesterday, but I’ve been learning a TON over the past week or so about what all is capable of being done on the iPad, so a lot of what I’ll be posting initially is just a result of me being too excited NOT to talk about it.

Anyway, peep the voice recording “studio” I’m working with:

*Yes, that is a clay sculpture of one of my OCs standing atop an old Wacom Cintiq that has now been FULLYreplaced by an iPad. You wanna fight about it?

Kind of funny that I stopped animating due to not wanting to work at a desk all the time, only to get back at it and work at... a desk... Oh, the irony of needing to be in a stable position to record voice work.

Turns out, the Yeti mic hooks right up to the 2018 iPad flawlessly if you have a USB-C adapter, and the built in Monitor that the mic is equipped with still works and registers with Garage Band. There isn’t even a delay when unplugging and plugging back in, which is amazing when you listen back to your recording and realize you hate the way you pronounced a word, and want to quickly hop back into the project to re-record a segment.

Garage Band for iPad has it’s quirks, but overall, I was able to get exactly what I needed out of it, and then some. If you’re looking to go this route with a project, I just recommend saving often, because certain functions (mainly gain automation, on my end) cause the app to crash out of nowhere, and I couldn’t find any documentation as to why online, outside of the fact that it was not a software limitation, so I’m assuming it’s just a weird bug.

*Quick Tip* Clip Studio Paint will only play audio in the timeline if it’s in an MP3 format, and garage band exports to MP4 (at least with the high quality audio, I haven’t tried other formats yet) so you’ll need to convert it. You can do some from an iPad by using Zamzar.com, which is an online conversion tool. You get 2 free conversion saves per day, but if you need more, you can play the system by refreshing your VPN if you have one.

Something I didn’t bring up in my first post, which might be questioned later on if anyone starts to follow this, is my iPad specs. I’m using a 3rd Generation (2018) iPad Pro, 12.9 inch, 1TB model. I got this model because it had extra memory on board, only to find out that that extra memory didn’t really mean much, since it wasn’t accessible to developers until the latest model came out, which is annoying BUT a testament to the fact that you don’t actually have to dish out the extra money for the higher end models to do stuff like this. In the end, I could have easily gotten the lowest gig model and purchased an external hard drive for much cheaper and obtained the same result. Just some food for thought.

ANYWAY, I hope these posts serve as a good indicator of what all can be done with an iPad and a little elbow grease. I realize there’s more to it than just an iPad, and it isn’t exactly a “cheap” version of animating, but nonetheless, I DO feel like this process is WAY more accessible to WAY more people in the end, so I hope at least a few people benefit from my ramblings. Even if not, I’m fully comfortable with just ranting to the void, so expect loads more to come.

Hey Party People!

I fell off the face of the earth for a while, rolled around in space, and finally found my way back. By that, I don’t just mean that I left NG for a while, because that’s quite apparent, but I also stopped animating for a while, and nearly altogether.

I wish I had some cool, edgy sob story of a reason why, but no... I just didn’t like working from a desk, and for some ungodly reason couldn’t find a solid mobile animation program/application that could handle making anything other than “fun gifs”, which like... bore me right the hell to sleep would ya? (Jk, they’re actually super fun to make, and I’ll probably make/post some in the future).

BUT....

THOSE DAYS ARE GONE. Clip Studio Paint TO. THE. RESCUE!!!

I realize I’m quite late to the CSP fanboy party, but for some ungodly reason, no matter how many searches I did for iPad animation apps (and let me tell you, I did A LOT), the only things that would come up were the trendy apps like Procreate, which is still Bae for drawing but it’s animation features leave a LOT to be desired, and Rough Animator, which is cool and getting more feature rich over time but it has (in my opinion) a very ugly interface, and I simply can’t imagine making anything worth while in it.

Enter - CSP.

I swear, this app needs SO MUCH more attention than it gets for it’s animation features. Not only is the app basically the best example of a full fledged desktop program on an iPad (fight for for even a close second, I dare you), it’s LOADED with features that make animating while mobile feel incredible. To name a few that I’ve seen get looked over CONSTANTLY by the people of the web, CSPEX allows you to animation on an unlimited timeline, IMPORT AUDIO (this was huge for me), use basic tweens, AND utilize a 2d Camera... ALL IN AN IPAD APP. The fact that no one talks about this is unreal to me, and also the reason why it’s taken me 2 full years to find it.

But, I digress, because this post is not about CSP. No, this post is about my upcoming (title TBA) project that I will be creating 100% on my iPad. *Disclaimer, I’m sure there’s probably an army of people who’ve done this first, but it feels new to me, and I’m excited, so please don’t get on me about being unoriginal.*

Project Details

Type: Animated Short

Length: 2 min, pre-credits. 2:45 post-credits.

Audio: Voice acted by moi, song by an NG artist (duh).

Animation type: frame by frame, and some basic tweeting where needed.

Equipment: iPad, Apple Pencil, Yeti Microphone, Clip Studio Paint EX.

DASS IT

This long, seemingly pointless to the passerby, post is what I’m going to use to keep me accountable. Even if only two people read this, I’ll owe it to those two people not to quit on this.

Stay tuned for behind the scenes/progress posts as things go along.

Super excited to be back on NG, and ecstatic to be working on this project. I hope whoever sees it enjoys it as much as I’ll enjoy making it!
